1.Describe or explain three skills or concepts you learned in LALT 101 this semester

  • Research skills: I learned how to start the research for any academic work, such as, academic search complete on the university’s library website. Moreover, i learned how to expand or narrow my search using, and, or, *. Inaddition, to how to pick the best articles or publication on a topic. Additionally, I learned how to search the library for books and articles and other things like vidoes.
  • Citation Skills: I learned how to find and look for the reference of an article in a certain style- MLA style- so as I can use it to site my paper or other tasks that need refernce. I also learned how the citation is so important because ofAcademic integrity, besides it adds an air of authority. In addition, I was also teached how can use the internet in order to get a bibliography of my work. This is through the Refworks.
  • Library use: I learned how the library is so important for a research and how can I use it. Besides, I learned what are the other things that can be included in a library and its website.

2.Think about the topics we covered in LALT 101 this semester. What ideas are you still confused about? Or, what would you have liked to spend more time practicing or learning?

  • I am still confused about evaluating websites. It might be confusing to know what is more credible and objective that the others.
  • I liked to spend more time in the lesson on how to narrow or broaden the research topic.

3.What did you like about blogging through WordPress?

It presents the posts in a good way, especially the part that it opens, like a very small page, whenever you scroll over a website.

4.What didn’t you like about blogging through WordPress?

It is a little bit disorganized and hard to use

Name of website 1: ENN- Environmental News Network

URL: http://www.enn.com/top_stories/article/22263

  1. Coverage: It covers everything that is concerned with my topic of global warming and egypt. Besides the main point o9f the article is discussing the global warming issue in Egypt.
  2. Accuracy: It is a recent article, therefore the problem is not changed or new events had occured to affect the accuracy of the article.
  3. Authority: The webpage is sponsered by the environmental net network which means they have the authority to cover all the environmental news that happens. They are only conserned with these issues, therefore they will be more accurate.
  4. Objectivity: It is objective as it is from an environmental website. This means that they are qualified in researches like global warming issues

Name of website 2: El Ahram Weekly

   URL: http://weekly.ahram.org.eg/2006/779/op7.htm

1) Coverage: It covers everything on my topic of Global warming and Egypt

2) Accuracy: It seems accurate, as it was published in 2006, which is not from a long time ago. Therefore, it covers the latest news of global warming, not results of global warming in the past.

3) Authority: El Ahram weekly is a well known newspaper, which have a very good reputation among the Egyptian newspapers. Therefore, the people will be more confident of the news. Besides, the author of this article is Mohsen Zahran, who is the professor of Urban Planning at the University of Alexandria.

4) Objectivity: It is highly objective. This is because Al- Ahram weekly is concerned with getting these news.

Google:

  1. The latest headlines:
  • Article 1:

Author’s name:Cole Hendricks

Name of the story: The UN’s Gloomy Forecast for Global Warming Refugees

Name of the newspaper/website: Environmental Graffiti.

Date of the article: Wed, Oct 29, 2008

 The url: http://www.environmentalgraffiti.com/ecology/un-forecast-global-warming-refugees/2803

  • Article 2

Author’s name: Mitchell Bard

Name of the story: The Meaning of Change Will Be Tested by the Auto Industry Bailout

Name of the newspaper/website: The Huffington Post

Date of the article: November 17, 2008

 The url: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/mitchell-bard/the-meaning-of-change-wil_b_144329.html

2.The oldest story in Google News:

Name of the story: 35-Nation Conference Addresses Global Warming

Name of the newspaper/website: The New York times

date of the article: November 13, 1988

The url: http://query.nytimes.com/gst/fullpage.html?res=940DE2D6153FF930A25752C1A96E948260

3. I use google news to find the latest articles and news on a recent topic

LexisNexis:

1.Cite the editorial.

Name of the story: Food crisis dishes up both challege and opportunity

Name of the newspaper/website:

date of the article: April 13, 2008

The url: http://0-www.lexisnexis.com.lib.aucegypt.edu/us/lnacademic/results/docview/docview.do?docLinkInd=true&risb=21_T5150166105&format=GNBFI&sort=RELEVANCE&startDocNo=1&resultsUrlKey=29_T5150166115&cisb=22_T5150166114&treeMax=true&treeWidth=0&csi=163766&docNo=3

2.The main argument: THE global food crisis has driven up the country’s rate of inflation. This increasingly put basic foodstuffs beyond the reach of the country’s poor. This is sure to lead to increased levels of social and political discontentment in the country. This infaltion was due to 2 main reasons, high demand from the wealthy and global warming on previously productive agricultural areas. There should be a solution for this inflation maybe if, businesses, government and labour worked together to manage the impact of the food crisis in South Africa and its fallout.

My opinion: I totally agree with this article.

3. I would use Lexis Nexis to search for articles on current events.

Library Press Display:

The authors name: Mahmoud Habboush

Date: 18 Nov 2008

3. When would you use Library Press Display instead of Google News or Lexis Nexis?

To get recent news about certain countries from its local newspapers
which is not available in the other two.

Business Source Complete  covers scholarly business database, providing the leading collection of bibliographic content. Indexing and abstracts for the most important scholarly business journals back as far as 1886 are included. They are availble in full text. This data base is availble off campus. There was 10 results availble for my topic- Global warming and Egypt. The articles that discussed global warming in egypt that affected business world were articles published from the period from 1999 till 2007.

Emerald Full Text is another database that covers articles in the of management, human resources,  marketing and engineering. It’s availble in full text. For my topic- global warming and Egypt- Ifound 11 results that the articles date from 1999 to 2008. This data base is availble off campus.

Comparison between the two databases: I think Business Source Complete is more easier than Emerald Full Text. This is because in Business Source Complete the articles are organizaed according to its dates from the latest to the earlier. But in Emerald the articels are randomly ordered, which is some kind confusing. On the otherhand, Emerald has more recent articles on global warming in egypt which were published in 2008, where Business Source Complete more recent articles, according to this database is 2007.
